French interior minister announces plans to introduce new ‘imam status’ The success of the status will depend on the willingness of Muslim communities in France to embrace it

(Morocco World News) Following the expulsion of Imam Mahjoub Mahjoubi to Tunisia, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin unveiled earlier this week the designation of “imam in France” status.

The minister made the announcement in a speech tackling the notion that Islam is “a religion for foreigners, by foreigners, funded by foreigners,” which he delivered at the second session of the French Islam Forum (FORIF) on Monday.

Since January 1, France has banned the arrival of new imams on secondment. Until now, some 300 foreign preachers, paid by their countries of origin, were sent for four-year terms under bilateral agreements between France and Algeria, Morocco, and Turkey.
