Birmingham man accused of Hamas support with headband remanded

(BBC) A man accused of wearing a headband said to arouse “reasonable suspicion” he supports Hamas has appeared in court.

Khaled Hajsaad, 24, who lives in Birmingham, wore the clothing at a pro-Palestine rally in central London where he was arrested by police, prosecutors told Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

The green headband had the “Shahada” written on it — the basic statement of the Islamic faith, the court heard.

Mr Hajsaad has pleaded not guilty.

His lawyer told the court the headband he was wearing was not affiliated with Hamas and was similar to the Saudi Arabian flag, which also features the Islamic creed.
