(Fairfield Citizen) The Board of Education is likely to vote on whether to make Eid al-Fitr, a major holiday in the Muslim faith, a school holiday as well.
The issue came to the forefront at the last meeting of the Board of Education, where dozens of residents, most of whom are Muslim, spoke to the importance of having the holiday off for the 2023-2024 school year. Residents spoke during public comment at Tuesday’s meeting, where they again advocated for the board to make it happen.
Superintendent of Schools Mike Testani said if the holiday was added to the student calendar he would either recommend adding a day to the end of the school year or removing the day off planned for Feb. 16, which is part of Presidents Day weekend.
