(Columbia Missourian) A Missouri lawmaker had proposed legislation that would make it illegal for judges to consider Sharia law in their judicial decisions.
Some, including representatives from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the 2016 legislation was Islamophobic. At the time, Faizan Syed, the executive director of CAIR-Missouri, said he went to the state Capitol and talked to the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Mike Moon, R-Ash Grove, about how the bill could harm the Muslim community. Moon eventually pulled the legislation from consideration.
That’s the type of work that Syed focused on during his time at CAIR-Missouri — educating people about Islam to improve relations between Muslims and non-Muslims.
On Oct. 14, he’ll officially end his tenure as CAIR-Missouri’s executive director. From there, he’ll take over as the executive director of CAIR-Texas, specifically the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter.
