(Journal Inquirer) A federal jury on Thursday found a Manchester auto mechanic guilty of making a false statement during an FBI interview in June 2015.
The mechanic, Fareed Ahmed Khan, 61, who has lived on Hudson Street, was originally charged with making false statements “in a matter involving international terrorism.” If proven, that allegation would have increased the maximum sentence for the single false statement count he was facing from five to eight years.
But federal prosecutors didn’t pursue the terrorism allegation at Khan’s trial this week in U.S. District Court in New Haven, and Judge Jeffrey Alker Meyer forbade almost any mention of terrorism in front of the jury.
The judge allowed Khan to remain free on $50,000 bond while he awaits sentencing, with no change in bond conditions. The sentencing wasn’t immediately scheduled.
