(Regina Leader-Post) Anne Sureshkumar has been called a racist for calling out shame and honour-based violence, but she says it’s not about race, religion or culture — it’s about a zero-tolerance stance on violence.
“In any society or any culture, there is abuse and violence,” said Sureshkumar. “If you look at history, it’s always there so why is it that we have to get so uncomfortable when it is something that happens within a certain community?”
A registered social worker in Calgary, Sureshkumar is originally from India, where she dreamed of being a journalist, but was pressured to follow a different path.
Not wanting to bring shame to her family, she pursued social work, which led to a master’s degree in social work and a master’s in philosophy in guidance and counselling. She has worked in both India and Canada as a social worker.
