(ANSA) A Sicilian appeals court on Tuesday upheld its December 15 quashing of an expulsion order for a Turin imam deemed by the interior ministry a threat to Italy on grounds of his allegedly extremist views including stating that the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, were justified.
The Caltanissetta Court of Appeals upheld the “no” to the immediate removal from Italy of Mohamed Shahin, a Turin imam subjected to an expulsion order from Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi.
The judges rejected an appeal by the State Attorney’s Office against the Caltanissetta court’s previous decision.
According to sources, the second instance judges also consider Shahin an “asylum seeker” and therefore he cannot be repatriated pending a determination of his status.
