Afghan national detained as suspected smuggler in Lesvos dinghy tragedy

(Kathimerini) An Afghan national arrested by Greece’s coast guard as a suspected smuggler in connection with a migrant-carrying rubber dinghy that sunk off the coast of Lesvos on Thursday has been ordered into pre-trial detention following his testimony before an investigating magistrate on Friday.

The incident left seven people dead. One child was reported still missing Friday afternoon, while 23 people were rescued.

Among the victims are believed to be the wife and one child of the detained Afghan man, according to reports. His other child was reportedly among the survivors.

The coast guard said Thursday that all those on board were from Afghanistan.
