(ANSA) The president of the Association of Palestinians in Italy has been arrested on suspicion of siphoning off charitable donations to Gaza and diverting them to the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
The man, Mohammad Hannoun, was among nine people named on arrest warrants issued by Genoa police at the weekend, seven of whom have been detained and two of whom are wanted, one believed to be in Turkey and the other in Gaza.
In all, 25 people are under investigation in the Genoa anti-mafia directorate (DDA) investigation.
Hannoun’s family members — his wife and two children — … according to investigators, were aware of the true destination of the raised funds and, at least his children, had on some occasions maintained contact with or transported the money.
