(TVP) Poland’s recent arrest of a 19-year-old university student accused of plotting a bomb attack on a Christmas market has reignited concerns about how radicalization can take root far from traditional conflict zones and often beyond the immediate view of security services.
Authorities say the suspect, detained in Lublin, had no prior criminal record and did not originate from known extremist milieus, yet allegedly maintained online contact with Islamic State-linked networks abroad. For terrorism researchers, the case underscores how modern radicalization increasingly unfolds in private digital spaces rather than within organized, hierarchical cells.
“There are no fixed profiles of who becomes radicalized,” said Paulina Piasecka, director of the Terrorism Research Center at Collegium Civitas, in an interview with TVP World.
