(Portugal News) The Constitutional Affairs Committee has deemed unconstitutional a proposal by the Chega party to amend the 2026 state budget, which aims to prohibit the allocation of public funds for the construction of mosques.
The 1st Committee met this morning, before the start of the discussion and voting on the 2026 state budget, and approved an opinion, prepared by the Social Democratic Party deputy Francisco José Martins, which concludes that the Chega proposal does not conform to the Constitution of the Republic.
The opinion was approved by the Socialist Party (PS), the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), Livre, and the People’s Party (JPP), with Chega voting against and the CDS-PP abstaining.
