Gillibrand apologizes to Mamdani over ‘jihad’ comments The New York senator was criticized for not defending the NYC mayoral candidate in a combative radio interview.

(Politico) U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand apologized to Zohran Mamdani on Monday after she falsely claimed in a radio interview that the presumptive Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City had made “references to global jihad.”

The junior senator and the mayoral candidate spoke by phone Monday night while Gillibrand was in Washington voting on the megabill pushed by President Donald Trump, according to a readout of the call Gillibrand’s team provided to POLITICO.

“Gillibrand apologized for mischaracterizing Mamdani’s record and for her tone on the call,” the readout said.

Mamdani would be the city’s first Muslim mayor. Gillibrand was on WNYC’s “The Brian Lehrer Show” Thursday when a caller to the radio program asked about holding Mamdani accountable for “glorifying” Hamas.
