Suspects in terrorism cases increasingly younger in Belgium

(Brussels Times) Suspects in terrorism-related cases in Belgium are increasingly younger, according to the Federal Prosecution’s annual report for 2024 released on Monday.

Last year, over 70 individuals were summoned in federal cases in Belgium on charges of committing terrorist crimes. The Federal Prosecution advises maintaining vigilance against terrorism, as new cases are opened every month.

The focus has shifted away from “departures” to jihadist regions to activities conducted within Belgium.

Attention is now centred on lone actors rather than multinational or international movements. These actors are individuals operating without external support and using limited resources to plan terrorist acts.
