Muslim pupils now largest group in Vienna schools as city debates civic education

(Local) With a growing share of Muslim students, Vienna’s education leaders are pushing for a new subject on democracy and coexistence in Austrian schools.

New figures from the city of Vienna show that children of Islamic faith now make up the largest single religious group in the city’s primary and secondary schools, accounting for 41.2 percent of all pupils. It’s a slight but noticeable increase from 39.4 percent last year — and it’s already fuelling new discussions about diversity, integration and how schools can help shape shared values in an increasingly pluralistic city.

The data, released by the office of Vienna’s City Councillor for Education Bettina Emmerling (Neos), covers around 112,600 children across primary, secondary, special education and polytechnic schools.
