(WBIR) Knox County has agreed to pay a Muslim woman $71,500 in a partial settlement agreement after she brought a federal lawsuit against the county and its sheriff in October 2024 for publishing a mugshot of her without her religious headscarf.
While Knox County agreed to pay her monetary damages, Layla Soliz is still trying to get the booking photo of her without her headscarf deleted. She is also pushing for the Sheriff’s Office to reform its policies on how people are photographed and booked when they are brought to Knox County’s detention facilities.
Daniel Horwitz, a Nashville attorney handling her case, said in a release that the lawsuit before U.S. District Judge Thomas Varlan would continue regardless of the monetary settlement.
