(ANSA) The right-wing League party has proposed banning the burqa in Venice, local dailies reported Thursday.
The motion filed by council whip Alex Bazzaro envisages a DASPO city ban for those wearing the Islamic veil in public.
“We ask the mayor,” Bazzaro declared, “to take a position as a political act: the burqa or niqab is a violation of women’s rights.
“I do not know of any other religious confessions that require hiding one’s face.” Venice has a conservative mayor, Luigi Brugnaro.
