German plans to reject asylum seekers at border pass with help of AfD

(DPA) Plans to reject more asylum seekers at Germany’s borders tabled by the opposition conservatives passed in parliament on Wednesday with the help of votes from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).

The proposals by opposition Christian Democrat (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz, widely expected to be the next chancellor, include turning away all asylum seekers at Germany’s borders and withdrawing German citizenship from dual nationals convicted of a serious criminal offence.

They do not have to be acted upon by the current government but still caused uproar just weeks before a German election on February 23, with the AfD currently in second place in opinion polls.

While Merz’s plans are controversial, he particularly sparked outrage because he said he was willing to accept support from the AfD in order to pass the motions if necessary.
