‘Common sense’ to ban veil in public places, says Salvini 'Against those who do not respect Western culture and freedoms'

(ANSA) It is common sense to ban the Islamic veil in public spaces in Italy, League leader Matteo Salvini said after the right-wing party filed a bill banning the veil and setting jail terms of up to two years for husbands who force their wives or daughters to wear it.

“A common sense proposal from the League against those who do not respect our culture and the principles of Western freedom,” said Salvini, whose party is often accused of being anti-immigrant.

“And zero tolerance for those who oppressively force women and girls to wear the veil, with prison and a stop to citizenship requests.”
