Davidson County sheriff shares religious head covering policy in lawsuit against Knox County Sheriff Daron Hall laid out his department's policy about religious head coverings, saying arrestees do not have to remove them as long as they can be identified.

(WBIR) The Davidson County sheriff provided a declaration in a federal lawsuit about his department’s policy surrounding arrestees who wear religious head coverings.

Layla Soliz, who practices Islam, is suing Knox County and the sheriff because she said a sheriff’s office employee illegally and improperly posted a mugshot of her without her hijab on the county’s public website.

In a court filing made Tuesday, Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall laid out his department’s policy about religious head coverings, saying in part, “religious arrestees who wear religious headwear — including religious arrestees who wear a hijab — generally are not required to remove their religious headwear for booking photographs.”
