(Euro Weekly) 81 people in Spain were detained for jihadism-related crimes in 2024, making this the highest number of jihad terrorism arrests for the second consecutive year, since 2004.
The arrests of the four Moroccan-born teenagers from Elche just before Christmas who were accused of plotting an attack on the city’s basilica raised the overall total for 2024 to 81 suspects.
Last year, numbers were also much higher than in previous years, with 78 arrests for suspected jihad terrorists, according to official statistics from the Ministry of the Interior.
Dr. Francesco Marone, an expert in terrorism and extremism from the University of the Aosta Valley, Italy, whose research has been cited by media such as El Pais and the New York Times, highlighted the figures in a social media post.
