Attack in Germany stirs debate on deportations to Syria, Afghanistan

(DPA) Calls for the German government to tighten rules for asylum seekers from Syria and Afghanistan mounted on Monday, three days after the deadly knife attack in the western city of Solingen.

Resuming deportations to the two countries has been a hot-button issue in Germany, particularly in the wake of the killing of a policeman by a knife-wielding Afghan migrant in the south-western city of Mannheim in May.

The latest attack, by a 26-year-old Syrian, has only intensified the pressure on Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who said he wants to step up deportations of unauthorized migrants on a visit to the crime scene on Monday.

Deportations should be accelerated “with legal regulations if necessary,” Scholz said in Solingen.
