(AFP) A teenager appeared in court on Saturday for allegedly stabbing an army chaplain outside a barracks in western Ireland in an attack that police believe was inspired by a “radical Islamist mindset.”
Police told the court that devices belonging to the 16-year-old suspect in Thursday’s attack, who is charged with assault causing harm, indicated support for the so-called Islamic State terrorist group.
He was arrested at the scene outside Galway’s Renmore Barracks having been restrained by soldiers who fired warning shots during the incident.
The victim, Paul Murphy, who is in his 50s, underwent surgery for “seven deep lacerations” after being stabbed several times, court heard.
