(Sydney Morning Herald) NSW Premier Chris Minns has been accused of “specifically targeting” the Muslim community after he flagged a review of hate speech laws, with an extraordinary letter from the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) saying it would deepen feelings of being “marginalised” by the state government.
The intervention followed an announcement by Minns and acting Attorney-General Ron Hoenig on Friday that former Supreme Court chief justice Tom Bathurst would review the “policy objectives and effectiveness” of part 93Z of the Crimes Act, which outlaws incitements of violence based on religion and race.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity so they could talk freely about the review, several Labor MPs contacted by the Herald raised concerns about the reform process.
