(ABC-Australia) Convicted Australian terrorist Abdul Nacer Benbrika has been released into the community after spending nearly two decades in prison.
On Tuesday morning, Victorian Supreme Court justice Elizabeth Hollingworth granted Benbrika’s release on an extended supervision order for 12 months.
His movements in the community will be subject to numerous restrictions, including electronic monitoring, limitations on who he can contact, and a requirement to attend compulsory de-radicalisation and psychiatrist sessions.
In 2009, Benbrika was sentenced over plots to commit terror attacks at a number of high-profile events and locations, and was due to be released from custody in 2020.
Believing he continued to pose a risk, the former federal government was able to extend his detention for three years, but ultimately lost a High Court bid to cancel his citizenship.
