Leeds hospital bomb trial: Patient said accused ‘seemed like nice guy’

(BBC) A patient who talked a hospital worker out of detonating a bomb in a cafe full of nurses told police he “seemed like a nice guy deep down,” a court has heard.

[Mohammad] Farooq, 28, was arrested outside St James’s Hospital, Leeds, on 20 January after police were called by a man called Nathan Newby.

Prosecutors allege Farooq had gone to the hospital intending to “commit a terrorist atrocity.”

At Sheffield Crown Court, Farooq denies preparing acts of terrorism.

On Wednesday jurors heard a recording of a call between a tactical firearms officer and Mr Newby, who started talking to Farooq after spotting him “looking upset” outside the hospital’s Gledhow Wing.
