(San Antonio Express-News) As he sits in a military prison, condemned to die for killing 13 people in a 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood, you might think the state of his beard wouldn’t be Nidal Hasan’s top concern.

But just as he did in court a decade ago, Hasan refuses to obey U.S. military grooming rules. He won’t shave.

It’s a futile act of defiance. The Army brings in a staff barber and forcibly shaves him. Hasan — who is partially paralyzed after being shot during his attack — formally objects each time but doesn’t resist, military officials say.

As the days pass in a colorless blur of the seasons at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., Hasan remains as stubborn as ever.
