(Houston Chronicle) A Houston man who dreamed, as a teenager, of becoming a martyr for ISIS was sentenced in federal court Thursday to nearly 14 years in prison after admitting he planned to travel to Syria to fight with the jihadist group and shared information with Islamic State supporters about how to build explosives.
U.S. District Judge Andrew S. Hanen also ordered him to be on supervised release for the rest of his life.
Kaan Sercan Damlarkaya, 24, pleaded guilty in July 2019 to providing material support to a terrorist group. Federal prosecutors said that as part of a plea agreement they would not pursue allegations he spread bomb-making information.
Damlarkaya, who was born in the United States and is the child of U.S. citizens, was arrested Dec. 8, 2017.
