Muslim woman claims damages, says jail forced hijab removal for mugshot

(MLive) A woman is threatening a lawsuit after she says she was forced to remove her hijab, a traditional Islamic head scarf, for a booking photo at Kent County Correctional Facility.

The 22-year-old Grand Rapids woman on Tuesday, May 30, filed notice of a claim against Kent County Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young and the Sheriff’s Department.

She was “forcibly stripped” of her head covering, according to a statement provided by the Council on American-Islamic Relations Michigan, or CAIR-MI.

A similar case in U.S. District Court in Detroit ended with an undisclosed settlement earlier this year against the City of Detroit and state Department of Corrections.
