San Antonio businessman accused of conspiring to fund terrorists in Syria

(San Antonio Express-News) A local businessman accused of conspiring to fund terrorist activities in Syria is on trial this week in San Antonio federal court.

Prosecutors allege Imad Eddin Wadi, 64, was looking to funnel money from an export business to the al-Nusra Front, a Syrian extremist group that fought the government of President Bashar al-Assad from 2014 to 2019.

Wadi faces a charge of conspiracy to kill, kidnap, maim or injure people and damage property in another country. He is also charged with conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist organization.

The indictment said Wadi and another suspect — Colombia-based Akmed “Daniel” Baroudi — discussed plans to find wealthy investors to bankroll an export business that would be used in the scheme.
