Appeal decision on Lisa Smith sentence due on Wednesday

(RTÉ) The Court of Appeal will give its decision this week on an appeal by former soldier Lisa Smith against her 15-month sentence for membership of the terrorist organisation ISIS.

Lawyers for Smith, who was convicted last year by the Special Criminal Court, told the appeal court she was at the lowest level of the terrorist organisation and her sentence was excessive.

However, prosecution lawyers said Smith had chosen to travel knowing of ISIS atrocities and had rejected every call to return.

They said the sentence was appropriate and had taken mitigating factors into account.
