(Sky News) Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil has reassured Australians that national security is of utmost importance while being quizzed about the potential release of Abdul Nacer Benbrika.

The infamous domestic terrorist’s future is up in the air, with a detention order which has kept him in custody three years past the completion of his jail term in 2020 set to expire in November.

Benbrika was arrested in 2005 and charged for planning terrorist attacks in Australia — including speaking of killing 1,000 people — when a Melbourne-based network was uncovered as part of Operation Pendennis.

He was sentenced to 15 years behind bars as a result.
