(NCA NewsWire) The alleged leader of a Sydney-based terrorist group who is accused of using a code in the form of a soccer team told one man during a phone call that he was “in charge of the whole thing,” a court has heard.

Hamdi Alqudsi, 47, is on trial in the NSW Supreme Court after pleading not guilty to intentionally directing a terrorist organisation preparing to carry out a terrorist act.

Prosecutor Patricia McDonald previously told the court Alqudsi was the leader of the alleged terrorist group Shura, which means consultation council in Arabic, between August and December 2014.

She said the group initially focused on organising Australians to travel to Syria to fight the government there, but their activities were disrupted by police.
