Trial of Calgary terrorism suspect delayed a year to allow new counsel to come on board

(Calgary Herald) The trial of Calgary terrorism suspect Jamal Borhot won’t be proceeding until the fall of 2023.

New defence counsel Pawel Milczarek on Friday asked that the accused’s trial be adjourned as he has only recently been retained.

The new trial, before a judge sitting without a jury, will commence exactly a year to the date later, on Oct. 3, 2023. A pre-trial hearing will proceed June 5-16, 2023.

Milczarek told Justice Glen Poelman he had received permission from Court of Queen’s Bench Associate Chief Justice John Rooke to set dates that far down the road.
