Judge slams terror prosecution: ‘How does this government do that to its citizens?’

(Brisbane Times) A Supreme Court judge has granted bail to an Australian man accused of terrorism-related offences while criticising the federal case for its “prejudiced” handling of religious defendants.

In July last year, Omar Saghir was arrested by Australian Federal Police when he landed at Sydney Airport from Saudi Arabia, where he had been since 2019.

His alleged offending included making preparations for incursions into foreign states for the purpose of engaging in hostile activities, of which the maximum penalty is 10 years imprisonment.

The AFP previously alleged Mr Saghir played a senior role in a Brisbane group that held a “religiously motivated violent extremist ideology” and a desire to travel to Syria to fight.
