‘We will only take back your dead body’: Forced marriage accused told daughter to stay with husband

(WA Today) A Victorian woman who allegedly forcibly married off her daughter to a stranger in WA told her to stay with her husband, saying “we will only take back your dead body.”

Maryiam Khan, a high school friend of slain student Ruqia Haidari, revealed the threat to Australian Federal Police in July last year, during an investigation into her friend’s death.

Ms Khan said the remarks were in response to pleas by Ms Haidari to stay in Shepparton after returning to Victoria from Perth to attend a wedding.

“Ruqia told me [her mother] had said to her ‘don’t come back to us, we will only take back your dead body,’” Ms Khan told police.

“This is because it is shameful in our culture for a woman to leave her husband.”
