Murderer seeks damages for ‘breach of religious rights’ over prison audiobook of Quran

(Stuff) A convicted murderer is seeking $7500 damages from the Corrections Department because he alleges restrictions have been put on his religious rights.

Sainey Marong is … serving a life sentence with a non-parole term of 18 years for the 2016 murder of Renee Duckmanton, who he had picked up on Manchester St in Christchurch.

Marong said he was concerned the Department of Corrections was ignoring his religious rights, in breach of the New Zealand Bill of Rights, by refusing him access for a time to an audiobook with the full text of the Muslim religious text, the Quran.

Marong appeared by video link from prison in the High Court at Christchurch on Monday before Justice Jan-Marie Doogue, representing himself in the claim.
