Michel opens door to EU funding for border walls The EU has long refused to allow such financing, but is under increasing pressure to relent amid the Belarus migrant crisis.

(Politico) European Council President Charles Michel turned heads Wednesday when he claimed the EU could legally fund border barriers — calling into question a long-standing EU refusal to allow such financing.

“Based on an opinion of the Legal Service of the Council, it’s legally possible,” Michel said, speaking in Warsaw at a press conference alongside Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. Michel suggested the debate would be revisited soon within the EU.

Michel was in Warsaw because of growing tensions along Poland’s border with Belarus, which is pushing an influx of migrants to the area. The scheme, which EU leaders have dubbed a “hybrid attack,” has amped up pressure on the EU to help pay for Poland to reinforce its border wall.
