Civil rights attorney launches congressional bid in Michigan’s Thumb region

(MLive) Civil rights attorney and human rights activist Huwaida Arraf is running to represent southeast Michigan in the U.S. House.

Arraf, a 45-year-old Macomb Township Democrat, acknowledged congressional district lines haven’t been finalized by Michigan’s redistricting commission, but said she wants to start talking to voters ahead of the 2022 election. The Macomb County native wants to reengage working-class communities that have drifted from the Democratic Party, which has led to strong Republican victories in recent elections.

“I’m the daughter of working-class immigrants and being a mom myself, I really know and understand the challenges facing working-class people,” Arraf said. “Democrats, and the Democratic Party as a whole, need to do a little bit more investing in reaching out with our message and what we offer to people in these areas that tend to be more rural or look like they are overwhelmingly Republican.”
