(Sydney Morning Herald) The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) has cancelled a planned online forum featuring senior Taliban representatives after a community backlash.
The federation, which describes itself as the peak group representing Muslims in Australia, organised the event for Saturday to discuss the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” — the Taliban’s official name for their country — and the Muslim diaspora.
The forum, which advertised a “stellar panel of speakers,” was intended to discuss “the future of Afghanistan and our role regardless of whether we are in favour or against recent developments,” according to a promotional social media post.
