Repatriating Islamic State terror suspect Suhayra Aden cost $60,000

(Stuff) The repatriation of Suhayra Aden, a woman who joined Islamic State, has cost the government more than $60,000.

The government organised a “managed return” of Aden and her two children from Turkey earlier this year, after she was detained at the country’s Syrian border in February. Turkish authorities accused her of being a wanted terrorist, and intended to deport her.

Aden and her children were flown into Auckland in August, escorted by three police officers.

A police spokeswoman, in a statement issued on Thursday, said the cost of Aden’s return had reached a total of $61,870.80, as of September.

Aden’s family, who Stuff in August reported had moved to New Zealand in anticipation of her return, covered the travel costs of Aden and her children.
