Macron calls for European plan to manage Afghan migration French president says ‘we must anticipate and protect ourselves against major irregular migratory flows.’

(Politico) France and Germany will push for a European plan to tackle migration flows from Afghanistan as people flee the Taliban’s control, Emmanuel Macron said Monday evening.

“We must anticipate and protect ourselves against major irregular migratory flows that would endanger those who use them and feed trafficking of all kinds,” the French president said in a pre-recorded speech from Fort de Brégançon, where he is spending the summer break.

“Europe alone cannot bear the consequences of the current situation,” he added.

The upcoming “initiative” will focus on “the fight against irregular flows, solidarity in the effort, the harmonization of protection criteria and the establishment of cooperation with transit and host countries such as Pakistan, Turkey or Iran,” Macron explained, noting that he will push for such a proposal together with Germany and other European countries.
