Foreign fighter agrees to AFP monitoring

(AAP) A convicted foreign fighter has agreed to be monitored 24 hours a day with a tracking device while he reintegrates into the Australian community.

Adam Brookman was jailed for more than six-and-a-half years after admitting he supported Chechen fighters on the frontline against the Assad regime’s “demons” in Syria.

The 45-year-old Melbourne man pleaded guilty to performing acts in support or promotion of the commission of an offence under foreign incursion laws.

Brookman, a trained nurse and former Ambulance Victoria paramedic, claimed he went to Syria in 2014 to use his healthcare experience to help the local Muslim community.

After initially providing medical support around Aleppo he joined a Chechen group, helping with medical supplies, reconnaissance, guard duty and weapon maintenance.
