(Naperville Sun) If each of the 470 people waiting to make a comment on the Islamic Center of Naperville’s mosque plans actually speaks, the Planning and Zoning Commission’s review of the project could require as many as nine more meetings.
So far, the commission has heard about 50 comments over the course of four meetings, making the mosque development one of the most contested issues in the city since last year’s debate over authorizing the sale of recreational marijuana.
Mayor Steve Chirico said he is hoping Islamic Center officials will be able to work out a compromise with neighbors that could reduce the number of people wanting to voice their opinions — pro and con — on the project.
