(NCA NewsWire) A convicted terror leader who admired Osama bin Laden wants taxpayers to fund his bid to get out of jail after he was ordered to spend an extra three years behind bars because he was too dangerous.

Abdul Nacer Benbrika will remain in prison until 2023 after a Victorian Supreme Court judge granted a continuing detention order on Christmas Eve last year.

The 60-year-old was due to be released in November 2020 after spending 15 years in prison but the Department of Home Affairs argued he was too great a risk to be released into the community.

The self-proclaimed sheik wants to fight that decision and filed a notice of appeal on January 19.
