National rule on religious headwear in volleyball changed after push by Nashville school

(Tennessean) A Nashville charter school has led the charge for national change as it pertains to wearing religious headwear during volleyball competition.

High school volleyball players no longer need state association approval to wear religious headwear during competition, according to one of three rule changes implemented by the National Federation of State High School Associations ahead of the 2021-2022 season.

The change comes after Valor College Prep called for NFHS officials and the TSSAA to make a rule change last season after one of its athletes was prohibited from playing in a match because she was wearing a hijab.

The NFHS’s Volleyball Rules Committee amended Rule 4-1-6, noting that “head coverings worn for religious reasons are not considered hair devices” and do not require state association approval to be worn. Any head coverings must be made of non-abrasive or soft material and fit securely.
