(Age) Convicted terror plotter Abdul Nacer Benbrika had a “steady stream” of visits in jail from men who later fought for Islamic State and others who posed security concerns, a court has heard, and authorities fear he will regain that contact if released from prison.
Lawyers for the federal government are trying this week to convince a Supreme Court judge that Benbrika still poses a risk to the public and that he should stay locked up even though he has completed a 15-year jail term over a plot to bomb Crown casino and the MCG. He has been in custody since his 2005 arrest.
The government wants Justice Andrew Tinney to grant a continuing detention order, which would keep Benbrika in prison for another three years. Benbrika’s lawyers oppose the application.
