(NCA NewsWire) A convicted terrorist who the Australian government want to keep behind bars for another three years has not renounced “violent jihad,” a court has been told. Abdul Nacer Benbrika has spent 15 years behind bars after he was found guilty and jailed for being the leader of Australia’s largest terrorist network and was due to be released this year.

But Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton wants to keep the terrorist in jail until 2023 under a continuing detention order.

“He has not renounced violent jihad,” government barrister Rowena Orr QC told the Supreme Court of Victoria on Monday.

She said Benbrika maintained his position of violent jihad and violent extremism despite his claims his views had changed since a failed parole hearing.
