Tennessee closer to allowing high school athletes to compete wearing religious headwear

(Knoxville News Sentinel) Muslim athletes in Tennessee may soon be able to wear a hijab during competition without prior approval following votes this month at the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association regional meetings to allow student-athletes to wear religious headwear during competition.

The TSSAA Legislative Council will make a final decision at its meeting on December 10.

A ninth-grade student at Valor College Prep in Nashville, 14-year-old Najah Aqeel, was the driving force behind the decision after being disqualified from a volleyball match because she was wearing a hijab.

A hijab is a headscarf worn by some Muslim women.
