(Tennessean) Valor College Prep officials are calling on the National Federation of State High School Associations and the TSSAA to alter a uniform rule after one of its athletes was prohibited from participating in a volleyball match because the Muslim student was wearing a hijab.
Cameron Hill, the Nashville charter school’s athletic director, released a statement on the school’s athletics Instagram account saying the freshman volleyball team member was disqualified from playing Tuesday after a referee cited an NFHS rule that the athlete needed authorization from the TSSAA to wear a hijab.
The school sent an email to the TSSAA on Wednesday asking authorization for their Muslim athletes to wear a hijab due to their religious beliefs. That was immediately approved, TSSAA assistant director Matthew Gillespie wrote in an email to the Tennessean.
