After athlete was disqualified for wearing hijab, Nashville school seeks rule change

(Tennessean) Valor College Prep officials are calling on the National Federation of State High School Associations and the TSSAA to alter a uniform rule after one of its athletes was prohibited from participating in a volleyball match because the Muslim student was wearing a hijab.

Cameron Hill, the Nashville charter school’s athletic director, released a statement on the school’s athletics Instagram account saying the freshman volleyball team member was disqualified from playing Tuesday after a referee cited an NFHS rule that the athlete needed authorization from the TSSAA to wear a hijab.

The school sent an email to the TSSAA on Wednesday asking authorization for their Muslim athletes to wear a hijab due to their religious beliefs. That was immediately approved, TSSAA assistant director Matthew Gillespie wrote in an email to the Tennessean.
