Judge rules that man once jailed for terrorism crimes must be freed from immigration center

(Democrat and Chronicle) A federal judge has ruled that a man once convicted of terrorism-related crimes must be released, and the government’s case to jail him indefinitely has been constructed on slipshod evidence and informants’ lies.

On Monday, Rochester-based U.S. District Judge Elizabeth Wolford ruled that Adham Amin Hassoun, who was being detained indefinitely under a Patriot Act regulation, must be released with strict conditions. She ordered his release by noon Thursday, giving government lawyers until that time to file an emergency appeal if they so choose.

Hassoun, 58, is being held at a federal immigration detention center in Batavia, awaiting deportation. Immigration officials have not found a country to deport him to.
